Talking with Your Doctor About Gout

To best prepare for a visit to your physician and help gain control of gout, be ready to answer the following questions:

Questions about the pain:

  • Which joints are affected?
  • When did you first notice the pain?
  • Did the pain come on suddenly or gradually?
  • What was the pain like?
  • Was the pain worse during the day, or at night?
  • Was the area hot, red or swollen?

Questions about other symptoms:

  • Did you experience other symptoms such as fever, general achiness or a loss of appetite at the same time?
  • Have you noticed any lumps under your skin, especially on the ridge of the outer ear, the fingers, elbows, toes or around the Achilles tendon (where the heel bone connects to the lower leg)?

Questions about health history:

  • Have you had similar episodes in the past? If so, how long did they last?
  • Had anything changed before the onset, such as a change in medications or diet, or a drinking or eating binge?
  • Have you ever had kidney stones?
  • Does anyone in your family have gout?

Questions to Ask Your Doctor:

  • Are there any lifestyle changes I can make that might reduce my risk of having a gout attack?
  • What is my uric acid level?
  • Will any of the current medications I am taking increase my risk for hyperuricemia?
  • How does medication work to help my gout?
  • How and when should I take gout medication?
  • How long should I take gout medication?
  • What are the most frequent side effects of gout medication?
  • Could gout medication interact with other medications I am taking?
  • What should I do if I miss a dose?
  • What should I do if my symptoms are not relieved while taking gout medication?
  • Am I a candidate for a clinical trial?
  • Can you give me information about clinical trials?
