H. Ralph Schumacher, Jr., M.D.


H. Ralph Schumacher is professor of medicine at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In addition, he is a board member of the Gout & Uric Acid Education Society.

Dr. Schumacher has held appointments at the VA Medical Center and Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania for nearly 40 years. He is also an honorary member of eight international professional and scientific societies. He has been a guest lecturer, visiting professor and speaker at numerous conferences around the world.

He also is the editor of the Journal of Clinical Rheumatology and the former editor of the Primer on the Rheumatic Diseases. Dr. Schumacher also sits on eight editorial boards, and is the author of nearly 500 scientific papers and five books.

He is a recipient of many prestigious awards, including the Klemperer Award from the American College of Rheumatology and the Van Breeman Medal for Rheumatology from the Netherlands Rheumatism Society.

Dr. Schumacher received a bachelor’s degree from Ursinus College in Collegeville, Pennsylvania, and his medical degree from University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He completed his residency at Wadsworth VA Hospital in Los Angeles, California, and fellowships in rheumatology at Wadsworth VA Hospital and University of California Los Angeles Medical Center in Los Angeles, California, and at both Robert B. Brigham Hospital and Harvard Medical School, both in Boston, Massachusetts.
